Background: BNI Coal, Ltd., is a BNI Energy company and subsidiary of ALLETE, Inc. with locations in Bismarck and Center, ND.
Each year, BNI Coal mines 4 to 4.5 million tons of lignite, supplying two steam electric units of the Milton R. Young Station situated adjacent to the BNI mining operations. The Mining process disturbs and reclaims approximately 310 acres per year. The electricity made from BNI's lignite lights up farms and businesses in eastern North Dakota and northern Minnesota.
